I haven’t been home for a few days, but on March 1, a large flock of male Red-winged Blackbirds filled my rural Freeborn County yard. They were well-behaved (no fighting) and quiet. Then they left. They were birds migrating through to points farther north. Spring may be just around the snowbank, but a major sign of its arrival is when the resident Red-winged Blackbird males arrive later to skirmish and sing.
