Another mystery series that has birder/detective as main character - lots
of good writing about birds and birding:

Steve Burrows (Birder Murder Mysteries) series:

*A Siege of Bitterns*
*A Pitying of Does*
*A Cast of Falcons*
*A Shimmer of Hummingbirds*
*A Tide of Magpies*
*A Dance of Cranes*

 - the species of bird listed in the title has a role in that mystery
- I recommend reading them in the order the were written - the order on the
list above. There is an underlying/overarching plot that is best followed
in order.
- I would not be surprised is these were to be made as another BBC mystery
series
--------
Also not a bird fiction book - they are much less common than the
non-fiction ones that we all turn to -

*Mozart's Starling* - Lyanda Lyon Haupt
A lovely little book that explores Mozart's life, his pet starling and
whether it influenced a bit of his music.
