NE Minnesota Birding Days

Field Trip Report


Our group observed 32 species of birds over the two days of birding in St. Louis & Lake counties.


Here are some of the highlights from those two days:


Spruce Grouse - Lake County - MN 1, at mile marker #298.  This is West of CR 2 on MN 1.  3 Spruce Grouse were observed in the road at 9:15 am.

Sharp-tailed Grouse - St. Louis County - Continuing birds at the CR 29 and Racek Road Lek - We observed 10 sharp-tailed Grouse at this location at 8:45 am.

Rough-legged Hawk - St. Louis County - A light morph Rough-legged Hawk was observed along CR 27, just East of Lavell Road.

Snowy Owl - St. Louis County

Northern Hawk Owl - St. Louis County

Barred Owl - St. Louis County

Great Gray Owl - Lake & St. Louis County

American Three-toed/Black-backed Woodpecker - An American Three-toed or Black-backed Woodpecker was heard drumming at 3:30 pm at the Warren Nelson Memorial Bog on the 18th.

Northern Shrike - St. Louis County - 4 Northern Shrikes were observed in the Sax-Zim Bog at various locations.

Gray Jay - St. Louis County - Including 3 observed at the Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center feeders.

Black-billed Magpie - St. Louis County - Several were observed near the Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek on CR 29 and more were observed feeding on a deer Carcass along CR 5 about 1 mile South of CR 52.

Boreal Chickadee - Lake County - Spruce Road & Endless Waters Road - At least 2 Boreal Chickadee's were observed at this location on the 19th.

Snow Bunting - St. Louis County - 2 were observed at the NW corner of CR 5 and CR 52 on the 18th.

Evening Grosbeak - St. Louis County - In addition to getting to see over 30 Evening Grosbeaks at Mary Lou's feeders, our group had the pleasure of meeting Mary Lou.  Thanks go out to her for maintaining this great feeding station.

Common Redpoll

Hoary Redpoll - Several were observed at the Sax Zim Bog Welcome Center feeding stations.


Thanks go out to Kim Eckert, Frank Nicolleti, Sparky Stensaas and all those who have posted information about their recent bird sightings from the area.  They were a great help to our group.
