Isanti County Birding Day

Field Trip Report

The highlight of the day, was the Lesser Black-backed Gull found in with a large flock of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls along CR 5, just East of Lever St. NE. The bird was observed at the top of the hill on the North side of the road at 8:45 am and remained in this area until 9:15 am. At that time it appeared to have gone out of site over the hill, or was blocked from view by other Gulls. There was also a first year bird, which was briefly observed that was also likely a Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Other species of interest were the large numbers of waterfowl on Green Lake & South Stanchfield Lake. 20 species of Waterfowl were observed on the two lakes, with the only expected species of Duck missing was the Green-winged Teal.

For land birds, we walked at Irving & John Anderson park. Where we observed a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, both species of Kinglets and Brown Creepers. At Wayside Prairie Park we added Hermit Thrush and Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Here are a few of the species observed:

Greater Scaup - nice looks in with Lesser Scaup on Green Lake.

Horned Grebe

Red-necked Grebe

American White Pelican

Lesser Black-backed Gull

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Eastern Phoebe

Common Raven

Winter Wren

Purple Finch

Additional checklists from the day can be found on EBird.
