Laura Coble and I did a short walk in the lower Arb at Carleton College,
the loop beside the Cannon River. We had a quick flyover by a Sharp-shinned
Hawk. There was a flock of Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets along
the wooded hillside that parallels county 19. We also found a couple of
Hermit Thrush foraging there. Along the river, Yellow-rump calls were
audible; we finally saw one by the backwater beaver pond, where Kingfishers
and an Eastern Phoebe were also busy.

Lake Byllesby is currently prime for shorebirds, and a respectable-sized
flock was present mid-day. Most of them seemed to be Yellowlegs or Pectoral
Sandpipers, but there was one larger, chunkier bird---and probably
others---I didn't stop to identify.
Good birding to all,
Linda Whyte
