I had a nice surprise on Saturday when a pair of Red - shouldered Hawks
loudly announced their arrival in the wooded area behind our house. If they
stick around to nest again, it will mark the 11th consecutive year they have
nested here. This is by far their earliest arrival though. Last year they
arrived on 3/15, which was their earliest arrival until this year. The
neighborhood will be noisy for the next month or two until they settle down
and start raising their young!

This afternoon at least one Merlin was present in Acacia Park Cemetery;
though reluctant to be visible, it was, as usual very audible. It was
perched in one of the conifers directly south of the chapel building.
Often, it poses on bare branches at the top of one, but today it stayed
hidden within the evergreen.

I stumbled into a sizable flock of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS today. There were
about 60 males and 3 females! Also joining them were a handful of
Starlings.

This is by far the earliest I have seen them in numbers. My own previous
personal FOY sighting of RWBL was March 19th, so this smashes that record.
I also find it amazing that several females were also present.

The blackbirds were found on the border of *Anoka and Washington Counties,
near Hugo.* I was at the corner of Elmcrest and 170th St.
