Late this afternoon a N. Shrike was perusing the thickets on the north side
of the lake at Rachel Lilly Preserve (Mendota Heights). It was perched at
the top of a deciduous tree, but soon moved to another, before dropping
rapidly into the thicket out of site. Presumably it was chasing prey; its
presence might account for the near-total silence of other birds. The only
bird sounds heard were from a passing crow, and single chirps from a Robin,
a Downy, a Red-belly, and a Pileated Woodpecker. It's unlikely anyone was
cowed by the Red-tailed Hawk that had perched on the barn roof and flown
off.
