The only unusual sighting I've had is a male Red-winged Blackbird that
continues to feast at the safflower feeder. We've had three Pileated
Woodpeckers at one time near the suet feeder. We haven't seen any Purple
finches for a couple of years. The House Finch's have been few in number.
Goldfinches are fewer in number than usual. We have a male/female pair of
Yellow-shafted Flickers we love to see, and do see often.

Other than that.......the usual suspects keep us entertained.

I hate saying this. But we haven't been bothered by squirrels this year.
Just one or two. Man, I shouldn't have written this. The deck will
probably be torn down when I get home.

Happy birding! Stay warm!

* I've been out everyday so far this year for several hours along Minnehaha
* Creek in sw Mpls and have only seen goldfinches once, in a group of 3+,
* flying quickly away. They are usually the most reliable bird in this
* stretch, along with Cardinals, Chickadees, woodpeckers and House Sparrows;
* all of the aforementioned have been abundant so far this year.

* We have had good numbers of goldfinch this winter, often as many as 20-25.
* They have preferred shelled sunflower to Niger and make regular use of the
* heated birdbath.
* Juncos join them on the feeders, but also feed on the millet I spread on
* the ground. Does anyone have an inexpensive source for millet? I've found
* that it keeps the squirrels busy also, but the 5-6 that are regulars
* vacuum it up quickly!

*
* After a scarcity of birds at the feeders for a few weeks, suddenly a few
* days ago we had at least 8 goldfinches and the same number of juncos.
*
* Also, we seemed to be the sole support of 25 house sparrows for weeks,
* then
* they just went away about 2 weeks ago. The neighborhood Coopers Hawk
* may
* have been responsible for their departure. Now the sparrows are returning
* a few at a time.

* I work at Beaver Creek Valley State Park in Houston county far se corner
* of
* the state, and live just over the border in Iowa. I feed birds at both
* locations and have very strong numbers of goldfinch ands purple finches,
* constantly replenishing the niger feeders. The suet is going like
* hotcakes, lots of downy, hairy, and Red-bellied woodpeckers. Of course
* plenty of all the usuals, cardinals, blue jays, titmice, white breasted
* nuthatches Only one brown creeper this winter (at the suet) and no
* red-breasted nuthatches yet. A month ago saw a snowy owl at the Caledonia
* airport, and into late fall had an active Osprey at the creek hunting
* trout in the Park. Great horned owls have been vocal and active at the
* park last few weeks.
