A drive to Wabasha County's Hwy 84 early today allowed me to enjoy what seemed many like winnowing Wilson's Snipe between Hwy 61 and Smocker's Bridge. I saw at least 4 at once, heard 2 calling in a different direction and flushed one from the wetland. Had others been with me, we would have counted more.
Other birds I enjoyed were a close male Hooded Merganser, very alert, calling Sandhill Cranes, many singing and seen Swamp Sparrow, 2 N. Harrier. On the prairie American White Pelican (20) flew overhead, too many singing Field Sparrow to count, plus vocalizing Eastern Towhee2 , and Brown Thrashers 3 (a welcome sound).

There was only 1 pair of Eastern Bluebird between Smocker's Bridge and West Newton where a dozen or more usually show.

Swinging through Whitewater few ducks were in the first ponds which were overseen by a very active adult Bald Eagle. Closer to the WMA HQ a few Greater Yellowlegs were working the mud.

No Louisiana Waterthrush called at Trout Run, and no Peregrines.
The day's second pair of Eastern Bluebird was seen outside the Park HQ.
Hwy 74 between Hwy 30 and Hwy 61 is open but loose dusty gravel made it less appealing to get out and scan.

Good birding will only be better with the upcoming rain. Have fun!

Carol
